Conference aim

Understanding and optimizing brain aging is pivotal in meeting the demographic shift and ensuring that the increase in health span is accompanied with a similar or even better cognitive health span. The aim of this conference is to provide the attendants with a thorough understanding of the anatomical, physiological, metabolic, molecular, and genetic underpinning of brain aging and how these may link to cognitive adaptations and other health outcomes. The concepts or cognitive and brain reserves as well as brain maintenance, and the potential of preserving cognitive functioning in a lifetime perspective will round up the conference.

The speakers are leading researcher in their field, and include Professor Carol Barnes, University of Arizona, the US, who has studies brain aging in experimental models using a variety of methods for decades contributed significantly to today’s understanding of individual variability in brain aging. Cerebrovascular disease and its interaction with neurodegeneration will be covered by Professor Geert Jan Biessels, UMC Utrecht, the Netherlands, while the cerebrovascular health of older Norwegians will be presented by Professor Torgil Vangberg, UNN and UiT, who is involved in the longitudinal brain MRI studies in both the HUNT and Tromsø Surveys.  Professor Edvandro Fei Fang at Ahus/UIO is well known for this research on NAD+ and mitochondria/mitophagy in human again brain and will be paired with professor emeritus Jon Storm-Mathisen who will focus on neurotransmitter synthesis and its link to energy synthesis and change in these metabolic processes in aging. The concepts of cognitive and brain reserve and brain maintenance will be introduced by Professor Anders Fjell, UiO. Professor Gill Livingston, UCL, UK, the head of the Lancet commission for Alzheimer disease, and the main author of the commission’s reports in Lancet, will share the commission’s updated view on potential modifiable risk factors and how to exploit these to reduce risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Professor Kristine Walhovd, UiO, will present her hypothesis and data on the timing of lifespan influences on brain and cognition which predict a lower potential to reverse or minimize age related cognitive changes that for instance the Lancet commission. A debate including all conference participants will be led by Professor Geir Selbæk, National research center for aging and health.
